Chinese legend has it that tea was first discovered
by the Emperor Shen Nung around 2737BC. Walking through his
gardens with his customary cup of hot water, the Emperor was
pleasantly suprised by the aroma of a leaf that fell into
his cup. After tasting the drink he was so pleased with the
flavour and its enlivening properties that he never drank
plain water again.
In India, tea had its beginnings with the monk Dharuma. Dharuma
had vowed not to sleep during a seven year meditation. However,
after five years he fell asleep. When he woke he was so dismayed
that he tore off his eyelids and flung them on the ground.
A tea bush sprouted from where his eye lids landed. Dharuma
found that the leaves of the bush relieved his drowsiness
and enabled him to complete his meditation.
